The British capital of West Florida was in Pensacola. Following Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860, Florida joined other slaveholding states in seceding from the United States. Secession took place January 10, 1861 and Florida immediately joined the Confederate States of America. Florida was an important supply route for the Confederate Army, thus Union forces operated a blockade around the entire state. The capital of the Republic of West Florida was St. Francisville. The first governor was Fulwar Skipwith whose great-granddaughter, Leila Lee Roberts, of Staten Island, New York, has donated the original copy of the constitution of the West Florida Republic and supporting papers to the Louisiana State Archives. East Florida was originally a part of the Spanish colony of Florida. Under the terms of the Treaty of Paris (1763), which ended the Seven Years' War, Spain ceded all of its territory east and southeast of the Mississippi River to the Kingdom of Great Britain. Pensacola is nicknamed "The City of Five Flags" due to the five flags that have flown over it at various times in its history: the flags of Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America, and the United States Operations are currently controlled from Launch Complex 39, the location of the Vehicle Assembly Building. 6 km to the east of the assembly building are the two launch pads. 8 km south is the KSC Industrial Area, where many of the Center's support facilities are located and the administrative headquarters.
